Getting a Permit & Starting Behind-the-Wheel Lessons
At Vista Driving School, we’re here to guide you step-by-step through the process of getting a driving permit and beginning lessons.
-
You can schedule your appointment once your child is within a few weeks of turning 16. Please note: We cannot purchase the permit until the student’s 16th birthday.
-
The student and one parent or guardian must attendthe appointment.
Vista Driving School will handle the permit process and collect a fee that includes:The NJMVC permit
Eye exam
Knowledge (written) test, if needed
Set of red decals
-
To process your permit, you’ll need to provide:
Your child’s original birth certificate or valid passport (no copies)
A copy of Social Security card or the SSN
Proof of passing the written test (if already completed in school)
NJMVC form to be signed by parent
A $10 check made out to NJMVC for processing
Proof of address
Note: Only licensed driving schools can purchase a permit for a 16-year-old in New Jersey. Parents can only do so for 17-year-olds.
-
Once we’ve secured your permit, we’ll assign a certified instructor to provide the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, required by the state. Your instructor will contact you to schedule the lessons, typically split into 3 sessions.
