Funny things students say on their first driving lesson

Learning how to drive can feel exciting, stressful, and hilarious—all together. At Vista Driving School, we’ve helped hundreds of students take their very first lessons, and one thing is always true: nerves and laughter go hand-in-hand.

Here are a few funny (and very real) things our instructors hear all the time from first-time drivers:

1. “Wait—do I use BOTH feet?”

Nope! Just one foot for the gas and the brake. But don’t worry—almost every student asks this question in the first five minutes.

2. “How do I know if the car is on?”

Between the quiet hum of modern cars and all the dashboard lights, it’s easy to get confused. (Hint: if the car is moving, yes, it’s on.)

3. “Are stop signs… optional?”

We promise they’re not! But it’s always funny how many new drivers discover just how many stop signs they never noticed as a passenger.

4. “What if I accidentally drive to Florida?”

Don’t worry—you’re not going anywhere that far on your first day! We keep lessons safe, local, and stress-free.

5. “So… do I get my license today?”

Not quite—but you’re starting the journey that gets you there.
