Driving in New Jersey as a New Immigrant: What You Need to Know

Can You Drive with a Foreign License in New Jersey?
If you’ve just arrived, you may drive with a valid foreign driver’s license for up to one year — as long as it’s written in English or accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP).
After that, or if you plan to stay long-term, you’ll need to apply for a New Jersey driver’s license through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC).
How to Get a New Jersey License as a New Immigrant

✅ Gather Your Documents: You’ll need to satisfy the NJMVC’s 6 Points of ID system — this includes your passport, visa, proof of address, and Social Security number (or an affidavit if not eligible).
✅ Take the Knowledge Test: This written exam covers NJ road signs, laws, and safety rules. Practice with our online test.
✅ Pass the Vision Test: You’ll take a simple eye exam at the NJMVC.
